How turn on of off System icons in Notification area in Windows Vista?

System icons in Notification area:

These are the System icons you can turn on or off:

Clock
Volume
Network
Power

You can either turn on or turn off them using Taskbar and Start Menu Properties by checking or unchecking them as shown below:

If you disable them through Local Group Policy Editor then they cannot be turned on or off by the user i.e the users cannot check or uncheck them to turn on or turn off them from Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. They will then be represented in the gray form as shown below:

You can turn on or off System icons in Notification area using Taskbar and Start Menu Properties in the following way:

1) Right click on the Taskbar and select Properties option

2) In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window select Notification Area tab

3) Now check or uncheck the desired System icons to turn on or turn off them respectively..

4) Click Apply and then OK button


You can Enable or Disable them through Local Group Policy Editor in the following way:

1) Open Local Group Policy Editor window.

2) Now navigate to the folder

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar in the left pane.

3) Now double click one or more of the following options:

Remove Clock from the system notification area

Remove the volume control icon

Remove the networking icon

4) For eg. double click the Remove Clock from the system notification area. Then in the Remove Clock from the system notification area Properties window select the dot Enabled to disable the clock from being turned on or off in the Notification area.

OR

Select the dot Not Configured or Disabled to enable the clock from being turned on or off in the Notification area

Note: If you disable all the system icons then all will be grayed out in the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window as shown in the Figure 3.

5) Click Apply and then OK button.
