How to Show or Hide Desktop Icons Text in Windows Vista?

Desktop Icons text shown and hidden:

You can hide icons text in the following way:

    1) Right click on the desired icon, say Computer icon, for example, and choose Rename option

    2) Now delete the Computer name so that the icon looks like this:

    3) Now press down and hold the ALT key and type 255 from the number keypad once if it is the first icon whose text to be hidden. If it is the second icon then press down and hold the ALT key and type 255 from the number keypad twice. If it is the third icon then press down and hold the ALT key and type 255 from the number keypad thrice. Similarly you can hide the text of any number of icons on the desktop by just increasing the number of times you type 255 from the Number Keypad after pressing and holding down the ALT key.

Note: Type the 255 number from the Number keypad on the right hand side of the keyboard and not from the numbers present above the alphabet keys otherwise this setting will not work.

    4) Press Enter key

    5) Your icon text will be hidden as shown in Figure 1

You can show every icon text except the Folder icons text in the following way:

    1) Simply right click on the icon whose text is to be shown and select Rename option

    2) Name type the desired name of the icon and press Enter key

You can show Folder icons text in the following way:

    1) Open Start Menu and type cmd in the search box and press Enter key

    2) In the Command Prompt type cd\Users\User_Name\Desktop and press Enter key

Note: Replace User_Name with the user name you are logged on with.

    3) Now type ren “<Press down and hold the ALT key and type 255 that many number of times that you had typed at the time of hiding it>” “<name or text of the folder>”
    4) Press Enter key

    5) The folder now can be viewed with the desired text.
