How to record a sound output in Windows Vista?

I am running Windows Vista operating system on my Dell XPS M1530 laptop. I am trying to record the output from the system. So, I am looking for enabling the Stereo Mix option from the recording devices in Sound Properties, but I am unable to find it on Dell. Can anyone know how to enable the Stereo Mix option on Dell laptop for Windows Vista? Please help me.
