How to prevent deletion of Vista System Restore Points while dual booting with Windows XP in Windows Vista?

When you dual boot the system with Windows XP, the System Restore Points created by Vista are deleted. With the help of this setting you can prevent the deletion of Vista System Restore Points.

Note: You need to log in to Windows XP and not in Windows Vista to accomplish this.

You can accomplish this in the following manner:

1) Open Start Menu and click on Run

2) Type gpedit and press Enter key to open Registry Editor

3) Navigate to the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices in the left pane

4) Right click on MountedDevices in the left pane and select New and then Key options as shown in the above figure

5) Name this key as Offline

6) Right click in the right pane and choose New and then DWORD (32bit) Value options as shown in the above figure

7) Name it \DosDevices\D:

8) Now double click the \DosDevices\D: and type 1 in the Value data text box and press OK button

9) Close Registry Editor

10) Restart Windows XP for the changes to take effect.

Note: To revert back to default settings simply right click on the \DosDevices\D: and choose Delete option. Click Yes button to confirm. Restart Windows XP for the changes to take effect.
