How to open and use Local Users and Groups Manager in Windows Vista?



Local Users and Groups Manager can be helpful in setting various properties for the local users of your system as well as groups. You can allow or restrict them from performing certain actions via Local Users and Groups Manager. This includes backing of files or enable or disable accounts or allow or prevent users from changing password and so on.

Note: You need to log in as an Administrator to use Local Users and Groups Manager

You can open Local Users and Groups Manager using one of the following methods:


Method 1:
Through Start menu

1) Click the Start menu button. Now type lusrmgr.msc in the search space below and hit Enter key

2) Click Continue button if prompted by UAC

3) The Local Users and Group Manager window now opens

Method 2: Via Computer Management window

1) Right click on the Computer icon on the Desktop and choose Manage option

2) Click Continue button if prompted by UAC

3) Now expand Local Users and Group branch in the left pane

You can use Local Users and Groups Manager in the following way:

1) Open the Local Users and Groups Manager in any of the ways suggested above.

2) Now click the Users option in the left pane and double click any desired user on the middle pane.

3) Now you can type the users full name and its description under General tab

4) You can also allow or prevent the user from changing password, set whether the password expires or not or enable or disable account through options highlighted in the figure above

5) Under the Member Of tab you can set the group to which it belongs. You can add a new group too via clicking the Add button

Under the Profile tab You can type the Profile path, associate a log on script or set Home folder settings

7) You can select Local path and provide a local path for the Home folder or you can select the shared network directory as a Home folder.

8) In the To textbox you can provide network path for user’s Home folder

9) Click Apply and then OK button after making necessary changes

10) Now select Groups option in the left pane

11) Double click any desired group in the middle pane

12) Now you can type the description of the group and add or remove users via Add and Remove buttons
