How to Copy Text from Command Prompt or Paste text to Command Prompt in Windows 7?



You can either copy text from or paste text to Command Prompt using a simple trick. This can be done in Vista and XP too.

To use Copy operation in Command Prompt, follow these steps:

Option 1: Quick Edit Mode Disabled

Here you cannot directly highlight the text in the Command Prompt via mouse but have to use Mark option.

1) Right click on the Command Prompt window and choose Mark option

2) Now select or highlight the text by pressing and holding down the Shift key and then move arrow keys

3) When the desired text is selected, press Enter key and then text will be copied to the Clipboard

4) Open any text editor such as Notepad and paste the text there by pressing Ctrl + V keys

Option 2: Quick Edit Mode Enabled

Here you can directly highlight the text in the Command Prompt by left clicking the mouse and then dragging it over the desired text.

1) First enable Quick Edit Mode. To know how to do it click the link How to Enable Quick Edit Mode in Command Prompt?

2) Now simply left click the mouse and drag it over the desired text to highlight it

5) When the desired text is selected, press Enter key and then text will be copied to the Clipboard

6) Open any text editor such as Notepad and paste the text there by pressing Ctrl + V keys

You can use Paste operation in Command Prompt, in the following way:

1) Copy the text from and outside file

2) Right click on the Command Prompt and select Paste option
