    How to disable or enable replacing of straight quotes with smart quotes as you type in Word 2010

    When a user uses straight quotes in the document they get automatically replaced by smart one’s as soon as you type them. This becomes possible because as an option for the replacing feature of straight quotes with smart quotes is enabled. When you first install Microsoft Office Word 2010 on your system the feature comes automatically enabled.

    For those who want the feature to be disable they can go through few steps mentioned below to disable or enable the replacing of straight quotes with smart ones.

    Steps to disable or enable replacing of straight quotes with smart quotes as you type: -

    1. Follow any one of the ways given below to open “Word Options” dialog box.

    a) Start by clicking the “Microsoft Office” button and then click the “Options” button located in the “Word” tab.

    OR

    b) First click on “Microsoft Office” button and then click on “Word” tab. This will expand the sub-option of “Word” tab in its right part. Click on “Options” tab below the “Microsoft Tools” section.

    2. Now open the “AutoCorrect” options dialog box by clicking the “Proofing” tab in the left pane of the “Word” options dialog box and then clicking the “AutoCorrect Options...” button in the right pane of the same dialog box.

    3. In the “AutoCorrect” dialog box, click the “AutoFormat as you type” tab and look for the first section i.e. “Replace as you type”. Below the section you will find the option “ "Straight quotes" with “smart quotes” ”and its checkbox. Click in the checkbox to check and enable the option for replacing straight quotes with smart quotes as you type them and then click on OK button

    OR

    Click in the checkbox to uncheck and disable the option for replacing straight quotes with smart quotes as you type them and then click on OK button.

    4. Close the "Word Options" dialog box by clicking the "OK" button.
